This is a conceptual piece that I'm sure a lot of us can relate to. Money is a double edged sword. It enables us to do so much good, but just like having too much power can corrupt, having an excess of money can enable us to do a lot harm to ourselves and one another.
"Greed Kills" attempts to portray many of the negative sides of monetary excess, such as the seemingly unquenchable thirst felt by many of us to get more and more money, either through corruption, self-sacrifice, or just plain-old hard work. Corporate greed also rears its ugly head in the piece.
I'm certainly not trying to say that money and wealth in itself is a bad thing. But just like too many rich and fatty foods can be a detriment to our health, excess money, or an unnaturally strong drive to make money at all costs can be detrimental to our lives and the lives of those we love.
Admittedly, I put a lot of emphasis on my financial success, and sometimes it takes being called out by my friends and family to ground me a bit. So for me, this piece has a very personal appeal.
And as usual, the man and his dog are on their journey through the surreal lanscapes of my mind.
Technical details:
- Approx. 50-60 hours of work - Approx. 800 layers - Approx. $50 in istockphoto purchases - Naked girls courtesy of Marcus Ranum
I used some new perspective techniques that seemed to work out well, and I may find uses for them in future pieces. The perspective shift seems to help demonstrate a greater sense of scale and distance.
